Robin Boyd Foundation: Centenary of Design

2019 marks the 100th year of birth of one of Australia’s most influential architects Robin Boyd (1919-1971) and is being marked by the Centenary of Design celebrations hosted by the Robin Boyd Foundation. As the design partner of the Centenary of Design, Principle Design developed a brand identity to be used across the year-long campaign that showcases the ongoing legacy of Boyd’s architecture with an extensive program of events, exhibitions, talks and tours.

Inspired by the existing Robin Boyd Foundation logo designed by the iconic Gary Emery, we retained the base typographic arrangement, nestling it amongst the perfect circles of the numeric form and replacing the inner text, enhancing the references. The monochromatic colour palette of the original brand identity allowed us a ripe platform to introduce a brassy gold overtone. With an almost sepia-like quality, the result is a graceful yet historic aesthetic that captures the prestige of this momentous period in the Foundation’s history. Focusing on the nuances of the letterform, we created a numeric base, typographic logo that we extrapolated into an art deco-esque line and circle pattern that adds visual interest across both print and digital media.

The brand identity is flexible and designed to complement the existing aesthetic whilst also adding a sense of occasion to this exciting chapter in the organisation’s history. The brand featured across the launch events and is given a platform on the website as the hub of information on talks and exhibitions related to the celebration. With a myriad of events coming this year, head over to the website here and be a part of the Robin Boyd Foundation’s Centenary of Design in 2019.
